Pdf Summary
Trochanteric bursitis, also known as greater trochanter pain syndrome, involves inflammation of the bursa—a fluid-filled sac designed to reduce friction from tendons and muscles at the greater trochanter, the bony prominence on the side of the thigh near the hip. It may also involve tendons attaching to this area. This condition is prevalent among women, individuals aged 30-50, and runners.

Risk factors include rapid increases in physical training, muscular weakness around the greater trochanter, and tight iliotibial (IT) bands. Symptoms include pain on the hip and thigh's outer side, pain during activities or lying on the affected side, and sometimes a snapping sensation.

Sports medicine evaluation can diagnose trochanteric bursitis through physical examination, strength and range of motion assessments, and specific tests. While x-rays typically show no abnormalities in trochanteric bursitis, an ultrasound can reveal a swollen bursa or irritated tendons.

Treatment involves addressing the underlying cause, possibly including an IT band stretch or correcting running form or bike fit. Management strategies include rest, ice application, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), cortisone injections for severe pain, and physical therapy.

Preventative measures focus on avoiding overtraining and ensuring muscle strength and flexibility. Athletes may return to play once severe pain subsides, although recovery may take six months or more. Early diagnosis and addressing causative factors can expedite recovery.

The American Medical Society for Sports Medicine (AMSSM) supports these evaluations and treatments with its extensive network of sports medicine physicians, who provide comprehensive care for athletes across various sports levels, including notable professional leagues and Olympic teams.
