Video Summary
Hi, my name is Irwina Kwan. I'm a sports physical therapist at Los Gatos Orthopaedic Sports Therapy in Los Gatos, California. In this case, our patient is experiencing some ridiculous symptoms. In physical therapy, we want to resolve any neurological symptoms before we get into strengthening. There are many ways you can do traction, but in the clinic, the easiest way is to use a gait belt. We can do this by asking the patient to lie in a hook-lying position. We're going to strap the belt along their lower leg, just below the knee joint, and then strap the other side onto ourselves. In order to apply traction, we simply sit back and allow the joints to distract and the surrounding tissues to relax and hopefully improve mobility and flexibility.
