Pdf Summary
Myocarditis is an inflammatory condition of the heart tissue, usually caused by infections, autoimmune diseases, or other physical and chemical agents. Viral infections are a common cause, especially in the U.S. and Europe, while Chagas’ disease is a leading cause worldwide. Recently, myocarditis has emerged as a significant concern following COVID-19 infection, particularly among athletes who may experience symptoms like chest pain, palpitations, and exercise intolerance.

The symptoms of myocarditis often resemble viral infections, including fever, cough, body aches, and more severe cardiac symptoms like difficulty breathing, tiredness, chest pain, and abnormal heartbeats. While many cases are mild and resolve without serious issues, myocarditis can lead to heart failure or cardiac arrest in severe cases.

Diagnosis and evaluation typically involve a review of symptoms, a physical exam, and diagnostic tests such as blood tests, ECG, chest x-rays, and possibly more advanced imaging like echocardiograms or cardiac MRIs. When suspicion is high, a biopsy may be undertaken.

Management and treatment of myocarditis require rest, monitoring, and medication to treat infections or support heart function. Anti-inflammatory medications might be prescribed, or devices may be used to assist heartbeats if necessary. Severe cases may require heart transplants. Regular follow-up care, including cardiac imaging, is crucial, and return to physical activity should be gradual and supervised.

The American Medical Society for Sports Medicine (AMSSM), through sports medicine experts like Dr. Dusty Marie Narducci and Dr. George G.A. Pujalte, emphasizes the need for specialized care in athletes, offering comprehensive care and guidance in returning to sports post-diagnosis. For more information and resources, individuals can visit AMSSM’s portal.
