Pdf Summary
High blood pressure, or hypertension, affects approximately 75 million adults in the United States and is a prevalent issue among athletes. Defined by a systolic reading of 140 or greater and/or a diastolic reading of 90 or greater, hypertension can lead to serious health conditions such as stroke, heart attack, heart disease, and kidney disease. Although often undiagnosed due to lack of symptoms, significant cases may present headaches, vision changes, palpitations, and leg swelling.

In a sports medicine context, athletes undergo blood pressure evaluations using a blood pressure cuff. The average is taken from three readings with periods of rest, and additional measurements may be recorded over a week for accuracy. Physicians often recommend lifestyle modifications like dietary improvements, exercise adjustments, reduction in alcohol and caffeine intake, weight management, and avoiding over-the-counter diet pills. Medication may also be prescribed if necessary, sometimes following blood tests to investigate related health issues.

For injury prevention, athletes are encouraged to maintain a healthy lifestyle with proper diet and exercise. Return to play considerations vary; athletes can resume sports once their hypertension is managed. Exceptions may exist for those with additional health conditions like kidney disease or heart failure, which may limit or restrict their sports participation.

The American Medical Society for Sports Medicine (AMSSM) provides resources and expertise for managing athletes' health issues and includes members serving in various sporting organizations. Their role involves comprehensive care for athletes, ensuring safe participation in sports, and promoting a healthy lifestyle. More information can be found at www.amssm.org.
