Video Summary
The lecture, “Sports Psych 101,” by Vicki Nelson, MD, PhD, provided a broad overview of mental health issues in athletes from a team physician perspective. She emphasized that depression, anxiety, and other mental health concerns are generally as common in athletes as in age-matched peers, especially in high school and college-age populations, and can significantly affect performance, recovery, and overall well-being.

A major theme was prevention through team-based planning: building a mental health support network, establishing referral pathways, screening during preparticipation exams, and having clear emergency action plans. She highlighted the NCAA mental health best practices and encouraged using practical, adaptable screening tools, with follow-up built in. She also stressed the importance of choosing an appropriate environment, avoiding judgment, and giving athletes a sense of control during conversations.

The talk reviewed common conditions including depression, anxiety, suicide risk, concussion-related mental health symptoms, disordered eating/compulsive exercise, hazing and bullying, and psychological responses to injury, illness, and COVID-related disruptions. She noted that certain situations, like concussion and eating disorders, require especially careful assessment because mental health symptoms may be triggered or worsened.

Treatment options were discussed briefly, including psychotherapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, mindfulness, and medication when needed. She noted that SSRIs are the most commonly used medications, but athletes may be sensitive to side effects and anti-doping rules. Her closing message was to normalize mental health care in sport, reduce stigma, know your own limits, and rely on a multidisciplinary team when needed.
