Pdf Summary
Anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS) are man-made substances derived from testosterone, the body’s natural hormone that supports physical and sexual development, mainly in males. While steroids can increase muscle growth, strength, and reduce body fat, they are also performance-enhancing drugs with serious health risks.

Possible effects of steroid use include psychiatric problems such as aggression, hallucinations, depression, and suicidality; physical changes like severe acne, balding, facial or chest hair in females, decreased testicular size, and menstrual irregularities; and medical risks including high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol, heart attack, cancer, and spontaneous tendon rupture.

Sports medicine physicians focus on why an athlete is using steroids and the harms associated with them. They also help athletes set realistic expectations about performance and appearance. Because steroid use is often illegal in sports, random urine drug testing may be used to detect AAS. Athletes who test positive can face consequences such as suspension, fines, loss of medals or awards, or permanent bans.

Prevention depends on education. Athletes, coaches, and parents should understand the short- and long-term physical and mental dangers of anabolic steroid use. Return-to-play decisions depend on the rules of the sport’s governing body and should take into account the athlete’s medical and mental health, along with the risks of the sport itself.
