Video Summary
This ultrasound consult explains how to examine olecranon bursitis using a linear transducer with the elbow slightly flexed. The scan should be done in both long and short axis as part of a posterior elbow ultrasound. Typical findings include an anechoic or hypoechoic fluid collection, sometimes loculated, with posterior acoustic enhancement. The bursitis lies superficial to the olecranon. Ultrasound limitations include difficulty seeing a thin normal bursa and inability to distinguish fluid types or blood. In large patients, deeper bursae may be hard to image, but overall ultrasound is highly accurate for this diagnosis.
