Video Summary
This lecture reviewed performance-enhancing drugs and anti-doping rules for sports medicine clinicians, especially those caring for elite and Olympic-level athletes. Dr. Burton explained the roles of USADA (the U.S. national anti-doping agency) and WADA (the global anti-doping organization), along with the World Anti-Doping Code and the annual prohibited list.

She outlined major banned categories, including anabolic agents, peptide hormones, beta-2 agonists, hormone and metabolic modulators, diuretics/masking agents, blood manipulation, gene doping, and methods prohibited only in competition such as stimulants, narcotics, cannabinoids, glucocorticoids, and beta blockers. Important practical points included medication thresholds, washout periods, and exceptions for medically necessary treatments.

The talk emphasized how anti-doping testing works: athlete whereabouts, notification, urine and blood collection, direct observation, and newer methods like dried blood spot testing. Athletes have rights during testing, including cooling down, using a representative, and requesting ID from doping control officers.

A major focus was therapeutic use exemptions (TUEs), which allow athletes to use otherwise prohibited medications when medically necessary. Dr. Burton recommended using GlobalDRO, USADA resources, and supplement certification tools such as NSF Certified for Sport. She warned that supplements always carry contamination risk and should never be assumed safe.

Finally, she reviewed anti-doping rule violations beyond positive tests, including tampering, trafficking, evasive behavior, whereabouts failures, and prohibited association, and she stressed the clinician’s role in education, documentation, collaboration, and athlete advocacy.
