Video Summary
The lecture introduced the AMSSM National Fellows Online Lecture Series and focused on sideline emergencies, especially the collapsed athlete. Dr. Will Dinh emphasized that sideline care is “triage plus”: the first job is to determine whether an athlete is sick, not sick, or possibly sick, and to make return-to-play decisions based on immediate safety. He stressed the importance of an Emergency Action Plan (EAP), knowing available resources, practicing scenarios, understanding EMS and trauma center capabilities, and using closed-loop communication.

The main emergency discussed was cardiac arrest in the athlete. Dr. Dinh explained that if an athlete is unresponsive, apneic, and pulseless, the response should be immediate high-quality CPR and an AED. He highlighted compression depth, rate, rotating compressors every two minutes, and prioritizing minimizing interruption of compressions. He also discussed special considerations such as passive oxygenation, stay-in-play vs. scoop-and-run, and the limited role of mechanical CPR devices.

Other urgent/emergent conditions covered included neurologic emergencies (TBI, seizure, stinger/burner, suspected spine injury), respiratory emergencies (asthma, anaphylaxis, upper airway obstruction, tension pneumothorax), traumatic emergencies (arterial bleeding, blunt abdominal trauma, thoracic trauma), and environmental emergencies such as heat stroke and lightning strikes. He reviewed practical tools in the sideline medical bag, including tourniquets, epinephrine, airway devices, and decompression equipment.

The lecture ended with CAQ-style review questions on communication planning, heat stroke management, and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, reinforcing that preparation, teamwork, and practice are key to managing sideline emergencies.
