I'm Brett DeGoyer. I'm a primary care sports medicine specialist and neuromusculoskeletal medicine specialist practicing for Samaritan HealthCare in Moses Lake, Washington. So we're dealing with carpal tunnel syndrome, which is a fairly common problem, not just in athletes, but in the general public. For manual treatment or osteopathic manipulative treatment, when seeing a patient that has this type of condition, I want, as the specialist, to expand the space, expand the tunnel. So I'll use techniques that are stretching in nature to really try to get that flexor retinaculum to lengthen out. Additionally, I want to make sure that the tunnel itself, which is composed of not just the retinaculum, but also the carpal bones, I want to articulate those to make sure that they're moving appropriately, thus further relaxing that space, opening it wider to relieve any pressure or compression that's going on at the carpal tunnel over that median nerve. So those are some of the techniques that we would use for osteopathic manipulative treatment. If you'd like to learn more or see a demonstration, please reference the end of the case.
Video Summary
Brett DeGoyer, a primary care sports medicine and neuromusculoskeletal specialist at Samaritan HealthCare, discusses treating carpal tunnel syndrome, common in both athletes and the general population. He utilizes osteopathic manipulative techniques to increase space in the carpal tunnel, focusing on lengthening the flexor retinaculum and ensuring proper movement of the carpal bones. This approach is aimed at relieving pressure on the median nerve. For more detailed information or a demonstration, viewers are referred to the end of the provided case.
