Pdf Summary
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) is a condition affecting the wrist's median nerve, which passes through the carpal tunnel. This condition can occur when athletes put pressure on their wrists, such as from repetitive activities or wrist fractures. Symptoms include tingling or numbness in the thumb, along with pain often worsening at night.

The American Medical Society for Sports Medicine (AMSSM) is a multidisciplinary organization of 2,500 sports medicine physicians focused on education, research, advocacy, and caring for athletes of all ages. The majority of AMSSM members are primary care physicians with additional sports medicine expertise. They provide comprehensive medical care for athletes, serve as team physicians across various sports levels, and assist individuals aiming to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is diagnosed through detailed patient questioning and physical examination by a sports medicine physician. Treatment primarily involves resting the affected wrist. Wrist splints can aid nerve healing, especially worn at night. If symptoms persist beyond two weeks or worsen, medical consultation is advised. Recovery can be lengthy, particularly if numbness or weakness in the hand has developed. Surgical intervention may be necessary in severe cases, involving the cutting of the thick ligament over the tunnel by an orthopedic surgeon.

Preventive measures for CTS include avoiding repetitive activities, ensuring appropriately fitting sports equipment, and frequently changing activities. Athletes usually return to their original activity level after resting and symptom resolution. However, if muscle weakness around the thumb has developed, reintegration into activities like golf and tennis may be challenging.

Authors BJ Deimel, MD, and Chris Madden, MD, along with references from various medical sources, provide further insights into the condition and its implications on athletes.
